I would really love to knit Christmas stockings, but I'm not sure how to start. Are they just giant socks with interesting pictures on them?

Yes, Marsha, Christmas stockings are basically giant socks. However, all other socks I've knit on circular needles. This stocking I was knitting intarsia (blocks of color - using bobbins), so I knit it on straight needles.
